Guardians of Tradition: Celebrating Ayush Heroes of Padma Shri 2026

Honoring the Visionaries Bridging Ancient Wisdom and Modern Healthcare

The Padma Shri awards for 2026 represent a historic validation of the Ayush sector. By honoring practitioners who have dedicated half a century to their craft, the nation recognizes that ancient wisdom is a primary pillar of our future healthcare.

Ramchandra & Suneeta Godbole

Chhattisgarh

Field: Medicine (Ayurveda) | 37 Years of Service

For over three decades, this husband-wife duo has served as the primary healthcare bridge for the remote tribal communities of Bastar and Abujhmad. They began their journey when modern medical access was almost non-existent in these dense terrains.

By integrating Ayurvedic principles with deep cultural empathy, they established a sustainable health ecosystem rooted in local herbs and lifestyle prevention. Their work is a global benchmark for Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that the most underserved populations are never left behind.

Dr. Punniamaurthy Natesan

Tamil Nadu

Field: Siddha/Veterinary Medicine | 40 Years of Service

Dr. Natesan recognized 40 years ago that national health includes the safety of our livestock. Working at the intersection of Siddha Medicine and veterinary science, he validated herbal protocols that act as natural, sustainable alternatives to antibiotics.

His research has addressed the global threat of Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) by proving that traditional herbal preparations can effectively manage animal health. His documentation of ethno-veterinary practices has empowered millions of farmers with cost-effective healthcare for their cattle.

Dr. Padma Gurmet

Ladakh

Field: Sowa-Rigpa Medicine | Visionary Leadership

Dr. Padma Gurmet has led a monumental movement to institutionalize Sowa-Rigpa, the ancient Himalayan system of medicine. As the Founding Director of the National Institute of Sowa-Rigpa (NISR) in Leh, he turned an oral tradition into an academic discipline.

His contributions include documenting endangered high-altitude medicinal flora and establishing the Trans-Himalayan Herbal Garden. His work ensures that the “knowledge of the mountains” is elevated on the global stage and preserved for future generations through scientific research.

His lifelong dedication has proven that the surgical traditions of Ayurveda are not just historical curiosities but living, science-backed systems capable of delivering clinical excellence in modern medicine. He has mentored generations of Vaidyas to maintain the highest standards of practice.

A Century of Combined Service

These awards recognize the Ministry of Ayush’s mission to promote traditional systems. India is sending a clear message: Traditional knowledge is our heritage, and science is its future.
